TypeAloud vs VoiceInk
A VoiceInk alternative
that costs nothing, on every Mac.
VoiceInk is a well-made local dictation app for Mac, sold as a one-time licence from $25 for one Mac. TypeAloud also transcribes on your Mac and is open source, but it is free and has no device limit.

Same idea, different speech model
Both apps keep your voice on your Mac: hold a shortcut, speak, and the text lands at your cursor. In TypeAloud the shortcut is Ctrl+Shift, and a double tap records hands-free until the next press.
The difference is the model underneath. VoiceInk uses Whisper and Parakeet. Parakeet's multilingual model covers European languages, not Chinese. TypeAloud uses Qwen3-ASR, which detects the language from the audio and handles a sentence that moves between Chinese and English without a setting change.
No licence to count
VoiceInk's licences are per device: one, two or three Macs. TypeAloud is free, so a work Mac, a home Mac and an old laptop cost the same as one. It also has Windows and Linux builds, though those are still experimental.
Where VoiceInk is the better choice
VoiceInk can clean up what you say with an AI pass, removing filler words and formatting text, and it can rewrite selected text from a spoken instruction. TypeAloud gives you a faithful transcript and leaves the wording to you.
VoiceInk also has an iOS app and a large community behind it. If you dictate mostly in English and want AI cleanup on top, VoiceInk is worth its price.
Common questions
- Is TypeAloud really free?
- Yes. Local transcription needs no account, API key, licence or subscription, and there is no word limit. Cloud transcription is optional and uses your own Groq or OpenAI key, which those providers may charge for.
- Are both apps open source?
- Both publish their source on GitHub. TypeAloud is GPL-3.0, and its signed builds are free to download.
- Does my audio leave my Mac?
- Not in local mode. The model runs on your device and transcripts are saved there. Audio is only uploaded if you choose a cloud engine with your own API key.
- Which Macs can run it?
- Apple Silicon is recommended for local dictation. The recommended model is a one-time download of about 1 GB.
