TypeAloud vs macOS Dictation
When Mac's built-in dictation
isn't quite enough.
Dictation built into macOS is free and already there. It works well for a sentence or two. For longer writing, mixed languages or text you need to recover after a hiccup, TypeAloud is a free upgrade that also runs on your Mac.

Long dictation without the cut-off
macOS Dictation listens until it hears a gap, then stops. Pause to think and you have to start again. In TypeAloud you hold the shortcut for as long as you want to talk, or double-tap it to record hands-free until you press again.
Two languages, one sentence
Built-in Dictation transcribes in the language you have selected. Say an English product name in the middle of a Chinese sentence and it has to guess. TypeAloud's Qwen3-ASR model works out the language from the audio itself, so mixed sentences come out the way you said them.
Nothing gets lost
Every finished transcript goes into History on your Mac. If an app refuses the inserted text, copy it from there. If a transcription fails and the audio was saved, retry it. A dictionary with automatic replacements fixes names and jargon you use often.
When built-in Dictation is enough
For a quick reply or a search query, macOS Dictation is fine and needs no install. It also works with Apple's voice editing commands. TypeAloud makes sense once you dictate whole paragraphs.
Common questions
- Why does Mac dictation keep stopping?
- macOS Dictation ends a session when it stops hearing speech for a while. TypeAloud records for as long as you hold the shortcut, or until you press it again in hands-free mode.
- Is TypeAloud offline like Apple Dictation on Apple Silicon?
- Yes. After a one-time model download of about 1 GB, local transcription runs entirely on your Mac.
- Is TypeAloud really free?
- Yes. Local transcription needs no account, API key or subscription, and there is no word limit. Cloud transcription is optional and uses your own Groq or OpenAI key, which those providers may charge for.
- Which Macs can run it?
- Apple Silicon is recommended for local dictation. The recommended model is a one-time download of about 1 GB.
