TypeAloud vs Doubao Input

Voice typing on Mac
without switching keyboards.

ByteDance's Doubao Input brought strong cloud voice typing to the Mac. To use it, Doubao has to be your active input method, and your voice goes to its servers. TypeAloud keeps the voice on your Mac and works whatever keyboard you type with.

Keep the input method you like

Many people have a pinyin setup they are used to, whether that is the system keyboard, Sogou or Rime. TypeAloud is not an input method, so it never asks you to switch. Hold Ctrl+Shift, speak, release, and the text is inserted at the cursor.

Your voice stays local

Doubao recognises speech with ByteDance's cloud models. TypeAloud's local mode runs Qwen3-ASR on your Mac, so recordings are never uploaded and dictation works offline.

Where Doubao Input is the better choice

Doubao is a complete input method: pinyin typing, AI rewriting, and the same account on your phone. Its cloud model handles quiet speech and noisy rooms well. If you want one app for both typing and talking, it is a good choice.

Common questions

Do I have to replace my input method?
No. TypeAloud is not an input method. It inserts the finished text at your cursor, so you keep typing with whatever keyboard or IME you use and hold Ctrl+Shift when you want to speak.
Does my audio leave my Mac?
Not in local mode. The model runs on your device and transcripts are saved there. Audio is only uploaded if you choose a cloud engine with your own API key.
Is TypeAloud really free?
Yes. Local transcription needs no account, API key or subscription, and there is no word limit. Cloud transcription is optional and uses your own Groq or OpenAI key, which those providers may charge for.
Which Macs can run it?
Apple Silicon is recommended for local dictation. The recommended model is a one-time download of about 1 GB.
How do Doubao Input and WeChat Input voice typing differ?
Both recognise speech in the cloud and both need to be your active input method. Doubao Input starts with Option; WeChat Input uses fn, with fn+Space for hands-free. TypeAloud works beside either.
