After Dragon for Mac
Dragon left the Mac.
Dictation didn't have to.
Nuance stopped selling and developing Dragon for Mac in 2018, and today's Dragon runs on Windows. TypeAloud is a free dictation app for current Macs, including Apple Silicon, that uses a modern speech model on your own device.
No voice profile to train
Dragon was accurate once it had learned your voice through training sessions. Today's speech models are trained on so much speech that they work from the first word. TypeAloud uses Qwen3-ASR, downloaded once (about 1 GB), and needs no enrolment.
Dictate into any app
Hold Ctrl+Shift where you are writing, speak, and release. The text is inserted at the cursor in Mail, Word, a browser or a terminal. Double-tap the shortcut to dictate hands-free until you press it again.
Private like Dragon was
Dragon ran on your computer, and so does TypeAloud in local mode. Audio is processed on your Mac and transcripts are kept there. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose a cloud engine with your own API key.
What Dragon still does better
Dragon controlled the computer by voice: menus, formatting and corrections through spoken commands, plus specialist medical and legal vocabularies. TypeAloud turns speech into text and nothing more. For hands-free control of a Mac, look at macOS Voice Control alongside it.
Common questions
- Is Dragon still available for Mac?
- No. Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in 2018. Current Dragon products are for Windows.
- Does TypeAloud need voice training?
- No. It works immediately after the model download.
- Can I add my own terms?
- Yes. The dictionary and automatic replacements let you fix names and jargon you use often.
- Is TypeAloud really free?
- Yes. Local transcription needs no account, API key or subscription, and there is no word limit. Cloud transcription is optional and uses your own Groq or OpenAI key, which those providers may charge for.
- What other dictation apps run on a Mac?
- The roundup of Mac dictation apps compares ten of them by price and by whether they transcribe locally or in the cloud.
