TypeAloud vs WeChat Input
Voice typing on Mac,
kept on your Mac.
WeChat Input for Mac gained voice typing in version 2.0: hold fn, speak, release. It is fast, and it is cloud recognition from inside Tencent's input method. TypeAloud gives you the same hold-to-talk habit with local transcription, next to whatever keyboard you use.

The same gesture, without the upload
Both apps use hold to talk, release to finish. With TypeAloud the shortcut is Ctrl+Shift, and in local mode the audio is processed on your Mac by Qwen3-ASR. Nothing goes to a server, and it works offline.
Works next to any input method
WeChat Input's voice typing belongs to WeChat Input, so it has to be your active keyboard. TypeAloud is not an input method. Keep typing with the system pinyin, Sogou or Rime, and hold Ctrl+Shift when you want to speak.
Where WeChat Input is the better choice
WeChat Input streams text as you speak, handles many Chinese dialects and is a complete pinyin input method. If you already use it for typing and do not mind cloud recognition, its voice input is convenient and free.
Common questions
- Do I have to replace my input method?
- No. TypeAloud is not an input method. It inserts the finished text at your cursor, so you keep typing with whatever keyboard or IME you use and hold Ctrl+Shift when you want to speak.
- Does my audio leave my Mac?
- Not in local mode. The model runs on your device and transcripts are saved there. Audio is only uploaded if you choose a cloud engine with your own API key.
- Is TypeAloud really free?
- Yes. Local transcription needs no account, API key or subscription, and there is no word limit. Cloud transcription is optional and uses your own Groq or OpenAI key, which those providers may charge for.
- Which Macs can run it?
- Apple Silicon is recommended for local dictation. The recommended model is a one-time download of about 1 GB.
- How do Doubao Input and WeChat Input voice typing differ?
- Both recognise speech in the cloud and both need to be your active input method. Doubao Input starts with Option; WeChat Input uses fn, with fn+Space for hands-free. TypeAloud works beside either.
